Robot Framework vs Playwright (2026)
An honest comparison after years shipping production suites with both. Both tools are good — the question isn't 'which is better' but 'which fits this team and this product'.
| Dimension | Robot Framework | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Primary paradigm | Keyword-driven, human-readable | Code-first, developer-centric |
| Who writes tests | QA engineers, business analysts | Developers and QA engineers |
| Language | Robot Framework DSL + Python libraries | JS/TS, Python, Java, C#/.NET |
| Browser automation | Via SeleniumLibrary (Selenium under the hood) | Native Playwright engine |
| Mobile testing | Excellent — AppiumLibrary built in | Emulation only — no real device support |
| API testing | RequestsLibrary — first-class | APIRequestContext — solid but newer |
| Speed on web | Slower — Selenium-based | Fast — parallel by default |
| Reporting | Rich HTML reports out of the box | HTML reporter + trace viewer |
| Learning curve | Easy for non-devs, steeper for complex logic | Medium — requires JS/TS familiarity |
| Ecosystem | Mature, enterprise-adopted (banks, telco, defense) | Fast-growing, modern web/SaaS |
| CI/CD integration | Works everywhere, lots of plugins | First-class GitHub Actions, Vercel, etc. |
When to pick Robot Framework
You're in an enterprise setting (banks, telco, defense, healthcare). Non-developer QA engineers or business analysts will write the tests. You need mobile (real device) and API tests under one framework. You want a mature ecosystem that will be maintained for years.
Strength: The keyword-based DSL means even non-technical stakeholders can read and contribute to tests. It's been in the industry 15+ years — it's not going anywhere.
When to pick Playwright
You're working on a modern web/SaaS. Developers or TypeScript-comfortable QA engineers will write the tests. Speed matters (fast feedback loop in CI). You want to plug into the AI tool and MCP ecosystem — Playwright is the clear leader here.
Strength: Trace viewer, codegen, VS Code extension — debugging experience is best-in-class. With Playwright MCP, AI agents can write tests directly.
Can you use both?
Yes — many enterprise teams do. Robot Framework for mobile + API, Playwright for web. At Lento Circle I scaled the same approach with MCP-based orchestration: Robot generates keyword-driven scenarios, Playwright executes them on web, AI agents glue the two sides together.
My recommendation
For a new startup: Playwright. Modern, fast, AI-ready. For an enterprise with an existing Robot Framework suite: keep maintaining it, but add Playwright for new web tests. "Which is better" is the wrong question — "which fits this context" is the right one.
